坚持什么

今天 98.8 话题:为何坚持非学中文不可?

 

答:又有哪一个文化,比中华文化历史悠久?中国古情、修养,老祖宗们的智慧,穷我毕生都无法一一读透、参透。看某人阅读英文版的《三国演义》,甚至《孙子兵法》,当中多少精华被省略被抹杀?身边不谙华语的人常常对我说被送入非华小是终身憾事,而我总是为自己能阅中文庆幸,如果我有下一代,我将坚持他们学习华语,我深信我的下一代将会感谢我今日的决定,一如今日我感激父母的决定。

Besides learning the language, there's also the culture and the values promoted by Chinese schools. Reading Chinese literature in Chinese can be a very different experience than reading it in English. Language and culture go hand-in-hand as they mutually capture each others essence.

By the way, below is what Lee Kuan Yew said about education in Singapore:

"Everybody has the same chances in education and we chose a neutral language – English. Rather than legislatinng, we just said that you either go to an English school where you learn your mother tongue as a second language, or you go to a Chinese, Malay or Tamil school and learn English as a second language. After a few years, parents discovered that having English asa first language led to better job opportunities, so that solved itself. Malaysia went the other way by throwing out English and adopting Malay. The Chinese and Indians decided to have their own schools, teaching in Chinese and Tamil, and now they have a divided society."
